The National Institute of Open Schooling abbreviated as NIOS is the board of education functions under the Government of India. It was established in the year 1989. It was created with an objective to provide education to all.
It acts as a national board that conducts examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations. It also provides secondary education course, senior secondary education course, vocational education course and life enrichment programs through open and distance learning mode.
Open Basic Education is a three level course program that consists of Open Basic Education ‘A’ level course which is equivalent to grade III, Open Basic Education ‘B’ level course which is equivalent to grade V and Open Basic Education ‘B’ level course which is equivalent to grade VIII.
Secondary Education Program is a course through which a candidate can receive education which is equivalent to class 9 and class 10.
Secondary Education Program is a course through which a student can acquire education which is equivalent to class 11 and class 12.
There are a wide range of vocational educational programs offered by NIOS that ensures job immediately after the completion of the course.
National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) also offers Life Enrichment Programmes like music, meditation and yoga.

The mission of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is “to provide holistic education up to pre- degree level through Open and Distance Learning System”, “Contribute to the Universalisation of School Education”, “to cater to the educational needs of the prioritized target groups for equity and social justice”
National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) works with twenty three Regional Centers, 2 Sub Regional Centers and more than 7000 Study Centers.
