“A man’s ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.” – Albert Einstein
Behaviour and manner are the framework that differentiates humankind from animal. A human is considered a social animal due to behavioural evolution.
Behaviour is defined as “the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others.” It is very important for a person to develop a good behaviour at a very early age. A good behaviour is developed when a person is free from pressure and learns it as a necessity.
A person develops various behavioural skills through education, experiences and communication. Teachers play a significant role in developing a good behaviour. Children at an early age practically adopt various manners to connect with their surroundings. As they start going to school, their teachers help them to filter out good behaviourism from bad. This is the age where the children can easily change and adopt various behavioural skills with the help of teachers.
One of the effective ways teachers use to impart behavioural skills is through Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
These are different guidelines and practices that helps a teacher to cultivate behaviour in students through a positive approach.
Certain guidelines that helps teachers to impart good behaviour are:
Keeping calm and patience: Before teaching something, it is very important that teachers themselves should follow certain conduct. Teacher must be calm and firm in their behaviour while students learn their code of conduct. There should be always a positive affirmation from the side of teacher while the students learn. Never instil behaviour in negative comment like “If you don’t do this then I will……” instead use positive phrases “it is good if you good behave like this, it will help you communicate your needs.” Be equally available to all types of students, never favour a student especially in front of the class.
Maintain good relationships: Teachers should try to befriend their students to understand them more efficiently. Students need a mentor who won’t judge them but instead need a helping hand from them. A teacher can also keep relation with parents and also guide how to understand their children and give them proper upbringing. Teacher can provide positive feedbacks and child’s progress to parents and form a positive bond with both students and parents.
Collaborative Work: It is important that when a student is moulded in different aspects both teachers and parents should help the students. 0It takes teamwork to up bring a child. At school, teachers should set themselves as an example to behave properly. Schools should have guidelines that are easy to follow and does not offend their value. They should be rewarded for learning new things and behaviours through encouragement and positive affirmations. Teachers and parents should set high expectation of their children. A student will always work hard to achieve that expectations. If they fail, instead of scolding try to understand the problem behind it and help them sort their issues calmly, this will show that they are valued more than their achievements.
Behaviour management and academic should go hand in hand in developing a child.
